Tamarisk Row

Gerald Murnane

In a fictional version of Bendigo, Australia, a young boy grows up surrounded by horse racing, Catholic rituals, family tensions and private fantasies. Set in the late 1940s, Gerald Murnane's debut novel transforms the dusty streets and backyards of provincial Victoria into an elaborate geography of memory and imagination. A remarkable portrait of childhood in which the places we invent become as important as those we inhabit.

One of the best books to bring back the feeling of being young. Only rivaled by Patrick Chamoiseau's "Childhood."

Bendigo is obviously not a major metropolitan destination, but through Murnane, I could feel the heat of the streets and the cool touch of gardens on the shady sides of houses.
